HISTORY OF APRA AUSTRALIA

Apra Australia was founded from a shared commitment to advance the prospect development profession across Australia and New Zealand. In 2013, a group of volunteer prospect researchers came together to establish a dedicated forum for practitioners, leading to the inaugural Prospect Research Forum in Canberra in 2014. Attended by approximately 15 professionals, the Forum provided an important opportunity for connection, knowledge-sharing and collaboration within the field.

Building on this momentum, the profession's first online discussion group and annual survey of prospect development professionals were established. These initiatives highlighted the growing need for a formal organisation to represent and support practitioners across the region. An organisational framework working group was subsequently formed to explore the establishment of a professional association. Founding contributors included Stephen Rowe, Edwina Kenrick, Tim Grime, Anneke Burlinson, Charlotte Grimshaw, Eresha De Silva and Babette Pearson.

After considering several organisational models, the working group resolved in November 2016 to establish an Apra chapter, creating the first Apra chapter outside North America.

In February 2017, Apra Australia was formally incorporated in the state of Victoria, Australia, with Stephen Rowe serving as interim Secretary. Fundraising Research & Consulting (FR&C) generously sponsored the national registration fee, providing valuable support during the organisation's establishment.

On 1 March 2018, prospect researchers from Australia and New Zealand came together remotely for Apra Australia's inaugural Annual General Meeting. Following a member nomination and voting process, the organisation's first Board was formally ratified, and Stephen Rowe was elected as Apra Australia's inaugural President.

Since its establishment, Apra Australia has continued to support, connect and champion prospect development professionals through professional development, networking opportunities, thought leadership and advocacy. Today, the organisation remains committed to strengthening the profession and fostering excellence in prospect research, relationship management and fundraising advancement throughout the region.
