Mandarin is the most commonly spoken language in Australia after English, Chinese is our fifth-largest ancestry group, and China our third-largest country of birth. Australian universities host enormous international student cohorts from mainland China, our Chinese diaspora is generations deep, and an earlier wave of alumni is now reaching the stage of life where major philanthropy becomes possible.
There is a wealth of material on prospecting in the US and UK markets, but far less on how philanthropy works in Chinese communities, how to identify capacity in an unfamiliar information environment, or how to do the due diligence this work demands.

Lily Calderbank is a Senior Prospect Researcher at the University of Sydney, working within Australia's largest prospect development team. She holds over ten years' experience in philanthropy across the arts, medical research and tertiary education sectors. Lily is an APRA Australia mentor and has mentored prospect researchers through APRA Australia for the past four years.
